Juneteenth, Texas Legends and Traditions
Register here for our Voices at the Table SUNDAY JUNE 20th, from 4:30-6pm. In its final chapter our monthly zoom discussion will be about the legacy of Juneteenth, as well take a look back, and encourage YOUR voices from the Table with ways to move forward.
As it’s Juneteenth Month in Hays County, please take advantage of the numerous opportunities to participate across the county here where you can find the listings. You may learn alot and experience the happenings unique to our area, in preparation for our discussion.
This last VOICES AT THE TABLE forum will hear how local Black communities have celebrated this Juneteenth holiday, past and present. The panel will include Lawrence Coffee, a descendent of one of the original families of the Peyton Colony, located between Wimberley and Blanco, established by former slaves. Vanessa Westbrook, Chief Museum Specialist at the Hays County Historical Commission will also give us some context for this uniquely Texas holiday.
Check out this article written three years ago, about Texas’ ironic history inaugurating this holiday. You should also take look at the Netflix series, High on the Hog, Episode 4 “Freedom ” https://www.netflix.com/title/81034518
As aforementioned, we will take a look back at the past discussions of Voices at the Table, asking YOU, our participants, ways YOU have adjusted, or intend to move forward with newfound revelations about racism in OUR past and present, as individuals and as a community seeking social justice and harmony.
We have held this space to build some mutual understanding, and hope YOU will bring YOUR voice to the table as we commune together one year since the incidents that inspired this discussion.
