About Voices at the Table
“Voices at the Table” is a monthly Zoom panel discussion curated by moderator, Sandra Organ Solís, and produced by Dr. Carlos Solís, that brings together people of all backgrounds to learn about their local heritage, share their stories and listen to others bravely talking about their experiences. This is a community forum meant to confront, acknowledge, and lean into racial and social injustice in our region, utilizing their stories to provide ways forward into becoming a more welcoming community. These six monthly panels will begin on MLK Weekend and end on Juneteenth, the day set aside to celebrate the emancipation of slaves.
The forum is a natural follow-up to community discussions that took place last year surrounding several events.
Sandra Organ Solis, a woman of color, is a resident of Wimberley, whose curiosity and compassion was piqued after an incident last summer of an African-American family who had been vacationing in Wimberley, and found a racist note left on their cabin door. While this had all the vestiges of a sundown town incident, no one was acknowledging that legacy.
The View then published a letter written by Sandra and her husband, Dr. Carlos Solís, which urged Wimberley residents to “lean in, read, discuss, do the work of unlearning and relearning your part of the narrative of who we are, and how we got to this moment of racial reckoning.”
“Voices at the Table” offers a way to continue the process that many have been undertaking in this season of corona. Come listen to the voices you haven’t been hearing, or haven’t been included at the table, and perhaps you will hear yours as well.
